Hospital Bed Sheets
Hospital bed sheets — flat sheets and fitted sheets — specified for industrial laundering: fibre blend, GSM, finished dimensions, gusset depth for profiling beds, and hem construction that survives the wash house.
Hospital bed sheets fail in two places: the hem on a flat sheet and the corner on a fitted sheet. Everything else in the specification exists to delay those two events for as many wash cycles as possible.
This page covers flat sheets and fitted sheets specifically. Draw sheets, pillowcases, pillows and protectors are separate items with separate failure modes, and quoting them on the same line as sheets hides the difference.
A flat sheet specification has five variables, and all five need to be written down. Fibre blend as a percentage. Fabric weight in GSM. Finished dimensions, with the shrinkage allowance stated as a separate number rather than folded into the size. Construction, covering hem width, whether the fold is single or double, and stitch density. And the colour or shade reference, together with whether the fabric is optically brightened, because brighteners interact with bleach chemistry.
The single most common error on a flat sheet line is giving a size without saying whether it is finished or cut. A sheet quoted at 140 by 220 centimetres that arrives at 132 by 208 is not a defective sheet; it is a quote that silently included a shrinkage allowance nobody stated. That dispute is unwinnable because both parties are describing the same product from different starting points.
A fitted sheet is defined by its corner construction rather than by its flat measurement. Two suppliers can both quote "fits a 90 by 200 centimetre mattress" and deliver products that behave completely differently on the same bed.
Specify the gusset depth as a finished measurement, then state the mattress depth range it has to cover — using the maximum mattress depth rather than the resting depth. On a profiling bed the mattress compresses and extends as the head section rises, so a gusset sized on a static measurement will lift at the corners as soon as the bed articulates.
Specify the corner treatment as well as the gusset. A simple sewn corner costs least to make and fails first. A boxed or mitred corner with reinforced stitching costs more per piece and typically outlasts the body of the sheet.
Then specify the elastic. Fully elasticated holds better on a profiling bed than corner-only elastic. If you use corner elastic, give the length of each elastic segment, because "corner elastic" on its own covers everything from eight centimetres to forty and two suppliers will read those same words differently.
Where a fitted sheet keeps slipping, the fix is normally gusset depth plus elastic coverage rather than heavier fabric. Adding GSM to solve a fit problem spends money on the variable that does not cause the problem.
On the fibre question, institutional wash houses usually settle it. Poly-cotton blends at the same weight hold their dimensions better through repeated hot washing, dry faster and resist mechanical abrasion better than 100% cotton. 100% cotton is more comfortable when new and takes higher temperatures without losing strength, but it shrinks more and needs a larger allowance built in. Where the laundry runs chlorine bleach, white remains the practical standard because chlorine attacks dyed cotton progressively and unevenly.
Sheets are made to order with a 500-piece minimum per style and colour and a typical lead time of about four weeks from order confirmation. Send your bed dimensions including maximum mattress depth, your laundry conditions, and whether you need flat sheets, fitted sheets or both, and we will quote each on its own line.
What You Get
Why Source Hospital Bed Sheets From HotelsLinen
Flat sheets with a stated allowance
Finished width and length quoted as finished dimensions, with the shrinkage allowance shown separately, so that the delivered sheet measures what the specification said it would.
Fitted sheets built around gusset depth
Gusset depth quoted against your maximum mattress depth rather than the resting depth, with corner treatment and elastic coverage specified alongside it.
Corners that survive the load
Boxed or mitred corners with reinforced stitching and bar-tacks at the corner joins, because that is where a fitted sheet fails when the gusset is right and the construction is not.
Hems specified, not assumed
Hem width, single or double fold and stitch density all stated. A wider double-folded hem takes longer to fail at the same level of abrasion, and stitch density that is too high in the wrong fabric creates a tear line.
GSM rather than thread count
Weight in GSM correlates with the mass of fibre available to resist abrasion and predicts service life far better than thread count, which can be inflated by counting multi-ply yarns individually.
Fibre chosen against your wash house
Blend percentages quoted, and the selection driven by your maximum wash temperature and bleach chemistry rather than by a generic recommendation.
Shade reference and tolerance
Where sheets carry a ward or department colour, the shade is worked to a reference with a stated tolerance so that successive deliveries match each other under ward lighting.
MOQ 500, about four weeks
A 500-piece minimum per style and colour, typical lead time about four weeks from order confirmation, with pre-shipment photographs of the finished sheets before dispatch.
Custom Manufacturing
Send your spec or sample and we make it to order with consistent quality at scale.
Custom Branding
Embroidered, woven-label and printed logos, plus private label packaging.
Factory-Direct MOQ
Start from 500 pieces per style and color, with a typical 4-week lead time.
FAQ
Common Questions
How do we state the size of a hospital bed sheet?
Give the finished dimension and give the shrinkage allowance as a separate figure. If the two are combined into one number, neither you nor the supplier can tell later whether the delivered product matches what was agreed.
Why do our fitted sheets keep coming off the corners?
Almost always gusset depth or elastic coverage rather than fabric weight. On a profiling bed the mattress extends as the head rises, so gusset depth has to be quoted against the maximum mattress depth, and fully elasticated sheets hold better than corner-only elastic.
What GSM should hospital bed sheets be?
Institutional flat sheets commonly sit in the 110 to 150 GSM range for poly-cotton, with heavier weights used where the wash cycle is aggressive or the replacement budget is tight. The number that matters more than GSM is your target wash cycle count with the conditions attached.
Is thread count useful when specifying hospital sheets?
Not very. Thread count can be inflated by counting multi-ply yarns individually and it says nothing about how a sheet behaves in a tunnel washer. GSM, composition percentage and either yarn count or tensile strength are more useful.
Flat sheets or fitted sheets for a hospital bed?
Most facilities use both — a fitted sheet as the base layer and a flat sheet above it. Where a facility uses only one, the fitted sheet is normally the base layer and the flat sheet is used where the patient needs to be repositioned by drawing the sheet.
Can you match a sheet we already buy?
Send the existing sheet and its specification if you have one. We will quote against it and tell you where the specification is ambiguous, particularly on finished dimensions and allowance.
Do hospital bed sheets need to be white?
Where the laundry uses chlorine bleach, white is the practical standard because chlorine progressively strips dyed cotton. Facilities running oxygen-based bleach systems have far more shade freedom, but those systems usually need higher temperatures and longer dwell times.
How many wash cycles should hospital sheets survive?
Set your own target and state it with the conditions — temperature, chemistry and load size. A cycle count without conditions cannot be compared between suppliers, and the conditions matter more than the number.
What are the minimum order and lead time?
A 500-piece minimum per style and colour, with a typical lead time of about four weeks from order confirmation. Colour count affects the number of minimums, so decide the colour scheme before the request goes out.
Do you supply sheets for non-standard or bariatric beds?
Yes. Sheets are made to order, so dimensions follow your own mattress fleet. Measure the actual fleet including any toppers added since purchase, because mattress depth drifts over a fleet’s life.
